May the 4th Be With You

Star Wars first came out when I was two years old, so I can’t say I really remember it—but I’m pretty sure I’ve seen it over a dozen times. Whether I liked it or not, Star Wars was simply a part of my life. My dad and my sister were obsessed. When The Empire Strikes Back was released when I was five, I guess my parents thought I was old enough to see it. However, I remember my mom taking me out to the lobby because I was too scared to stay in the theater.

I got a brief break during my late teens and early twenties... and then I met Neil.

We met at the end of March 1999, and wouldn’t you know it—Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace was released just a few weeks later, in May. Of course, still trying to woo my future husband, I agreed to go to opening night. Since then, there have been many, many Star Wars movies and TV shows—and I have somehow been a part of all of them!

Ever since I entered ministry, Neil has begged me to preach a sermon combining Star Wars and faith. And what better time than May the 4th to finally take up the challenge?

So I have spent the week, not watching reruns of Star Wars for the hundredth time, but pondering what Jesus would have said about Star Wars. I know, shocking, right?

It’s not that hard to connect the Star Wars universe with the Gospel. Just think about it: the epic struggle between light and darkness. Or the redemption of even the most broken characters—And let’s not forget the power of unlikely communities uniting for justice.

Jesus would definitely remind us to live by hope, compassion, and sacrifice, you know, the real Jedi way, instead of fear and power...!

Star Wars holds a place in my heart... and in my sock drawer, where I keep my collection of Yoda socks. Who knew that saving the galaxy and fashion could go hand in hand, reminding us that strength lies in diversity. In that distant galaxy, heroes come in various shapes, species, backgrounds, and beliefs. Whether you're a Wookiee, a princess, a former stormtrooper, or a tiny green creature with large ears, what truly matters is the courage to embrace the light. This message powerfully reflects the neighbourly love Jesus speaks of in the parable of the Good Samaritan—a call to love without boundaries, judgment, or hesitation.

I won’t give it all away here—but let’s say, you don’t have to know every Star Wars trivia fact to see that these ancient stories about faith and hope and choosing love are still very much alive today, in galaxies far, far away... and right here at home.

Join me on May 4th for an unforgettable adventure! Bring your lightsabers or other Star Wars props, or come ready to join the fun. Don’t miss this exciting chance to celebrate the galaxy far, far away with fellow fans! Whether you're a Star Wars enthusiast or not, it will be fun!
